We're in the top 10!
On Earth Day, Philanthropedia announced that its network of Bay Area climate change experts voted Greenbelt Alliance one of the region's "outstanding nonprofits" working on climate issues. We were recognized for our more than 50 years of successes -- protecting 1.1 million acres of open space, establishing urban growth boundaries around 26 cities and 5 counties, endorsing the creation of 60,000 homes in existing urban areas -- and for our staunch support of quality of life issues like creating walkable neighborhoods and building affordable homes through land-use planning. (Aw shucks guys!)
Philanthropedia's experts particularly cited the Grow Smart Bay Area report, skilled staff, and ability to work equally well at the local, regional, and state levels of government as evidence of our outstanding achievements. Wrote one expert:
"Among the most difficult local issues to move is effective land use which improves quality of life and reduces climate impacts through walkable communities with transit options. Greenbelt has been instrumental in both ensuring quality projects such as Bay Meadows in San Mateo proceed, and that there is good regional planning and affordable housing."
As a top nonprofit, Greenbelt Alliance is a beneficiary of donations to Philanthropedia's Bay Area Climate Change Expert Mutual Fund.
