Smart Growth in Solano County

In Fairfield, the City Council unanimously voted amend the city's General Plan to promote investment within the city and to prevent sprawl from paving over agricultural lands and other open space. The General Plan Amendments protect Travis Air Force Base from encroaching sprawl, stop sprawl from spreading into Green Valley and Suisun Valley, protect land north of Rockville Hills Park, promote mixed use and transit-friendly urban design, promote multifamily housing, and increase Fairfield's ratio of jobs to housing. Fairfield deserves great recognition for these historic and forward thinking land use policies.

In Suisun City, major redevelopment projects since the 1990s have renovated the downtown, beautified the waterfront and marina, created a Town Plaza focusing on the Suisun Channel as its central feature, and invested in the design and construction of attractive, compact neighborhoods and mixed use developments. Sites of interest that are all within walking distance of one another in downtown Suisun include the compact and pedestrian-oriented Victorian Harbor neighborhood, City Hall, the Waterfront and Town Plaza, the Rail Station Plaza, the live-work Promenade at Delta Cove community, and the vibrant businesses along Main Street. Suisun is widely recognized for its success in revitalizing the town core, promoting smart growth principles, and enhancing awareness of the area's cultural, historical, and natural value.
