Go Greenbelt! a Success

Greenbelt Alliance * The Newswire
Volume 3, Issue 4, April 2004

The 15th annual Go Greenbelt! bike tour is over, but for the more than 70 participants, the memories will live on. The ride began Sunday April 18 in San Francisco, and riders encountered a few scattered showers on the first day. But as the week went on, the weather improved, and a real sense of community developed among the riders.

In seven days, we covered more than 480 miles of the Bay Area's back roads, and sometimes, its former back roads that have become main arteries for sprawl developments. Some of the landscapes we rode through are permanently protected, but in other places such as Brentwood, we could literally see sprawl rapidly consuming agricultural lands and open space. The funds raised by the riders will help Greenbelt Alliance expand our efforts to protect open space and promote livable communities through smart growth development.

We are indebted to the staff of Veritable Vegetable for their support during the ride, and we extend our heartfelt thanks to the dozens of volunteers who helped out during the ride to keep the riders fed and stocked with water.
