Greenbelt Alliance Report Wins National Award |
The American Institute of Architects (AIA) has selected Greenbelt Alliance's report Getting It Right: Preventing Sprawl in Coyote Valley for a 2004 Honor Award for Outstanding Regional and Urban Design.
Getting It Right is a comprehensive report outlining a smart growth vision for development in San Jose's Coyote Valley, 6,800 acres of farmland and watershed on the city's southeastern edge. Greenbelt Alliance released the report in June 2003 after convening a yearlong series of workshops with a broad spectrum of stakeholders to discuss how and where development in Coyote Valley should occur. Getting It Right demonstrates how development in Coyote Valley can foster economic vitality, promote social equity, protect environmental health, and build a sense of community.
"The fact that Getting It Right has now received national recognition as a practical guide to creating a vibrant community in Coyote Valley should make the City of San Jose sit up and take notice," says Tom Steinbach, Executive Director of Greenbelt Alliance. "As the City of San Jose moves forward with its planning process for Coyote Valley, it should not only embrace smart growth policies but also involve all the stakeholders who helped create Greenbelt Alliance's award-winning report."
Since 1958, Greenbelt Alliance has protected open space and promoted livable communities in the San Francisco Bay Area. Greenbelt Alliance produced Getting It Right in cooperation with a consulting team led by the respected land use and architecture firm WRT/Solomon E.T.C.
The American Institute of Architects (AIA) is professional association of 70,000 licensed architects committed to excellence in design and livability in our nation's buildings and communities. The AIA Honor Awards are the profession's highest recognition of works that exemplify excellence in architecture, interiors, and urban design. Greenbelt Alliance will receive the award in June 2004 during the AIA's National Convention in Chicago, Illinois.
