Greenbelt Newswire
In this edition On June 10, Greenbelt Alliance will release a vision for how the San Francisco Bay Area can grow sustainably and make our region more climate-friendly, affordable, and economically competitive, while protecting our farms, forests, and watersheds. We will announce our findings and challenge to the region on a new campaign website. Stay tuned! Event: Bluegrass for the Greenbelt June 28 Pack a picnic, soak in the sun, and listen to the music at the fourth annual Bluegrass for the Greenbelt June 28 in the meadow at Dunsmuir-Hellman Historic Estate in the Oakland hills. The benefit concert, underwritten with support from the Hellman Family, will feature the Wronglers, Grammy award-winner Laurie Lewis and the Right Hands, the Waybacks, and Peter Rowan. The family-friendly event includes kid activities, prizes, and silent auction items.
Action Alert: Voice Support for Climate Bill A comprehensive climate bill includes better land use as a key component in the fight against global warming. The American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009, introduced by California Representative Henry Waxman, recognizes that the country’s history of sprawling, auto-dependent land-use patterns has led to significant greenhouse gas emissions. But more is needed. Model regions like the Bay Area need resources to turn their plans into real climate-friendly neighborhoods. There is also a risk that the land-use provisions of the bill may be removed in committee. Tell your representative that the climate bill must include land-use planning as a central component and must fund leading regions to make their plans a reality. Event: Envision Jobs and Homes at Concord Base Thanks to the Community Coalition for a Sustainable Concord, which includes Greenbelt Alliance, the 5,000-acre shuttered base is on track to become protected open space with homes clustered near BART, but local support is needed.
Event: Tour Climate-Friendly Neighborhoods May 16 Tackling climate change will require a tool box of solutions, most significantly rethinking where and how we live. Take a tour via foot and train to see solutions in communities along the Winchester light rail line in Santa Clara County. The tour, which is sponsored by Greenbelt Alliance, Silicon Valley Leadership Group, and others, will showcase climate-friendly neighborhoods near transit and retail. Featured on the tour is Diridon Station, which will soon be the focus of a major planning effort by San Jose.
Action Alert: Keep Cloverdale from Sprawling At its May 13 City Council meeting, Cloverdale is likely to become the final city in Sonoma County to adopt an urban growth boundary, the line that contains growth within city limits. Unfortunately, the proposed boundary extends 2 miles south of Cloverdale, opening rural land up to development. Attend the City Council meeting and urge leaders to leave Asti out of Cloverdale’s boundary.
Take the Car-Free Challenge in June Curtail your driving in June by pledging to lower your mileage. Organized by TransForm, the Car-Free Challenge invites you to sign up online to win prizes—including tickets to Bluegrass for the Greenbelt—and share your stories of taking transit, walking, and bicycling. Learn more about the challenge at www.TransFormCA.org. Feature: Connecting Farms to Tables To take full advantage of Bay Area farmland, it’s important to keep produce local and connect the next generation—especially urban children—to good, fresh food. A new Contra Costa County program, Richmond Farm 2 Table, is selling boxes of seasonal fruits and vegetables to West County residents. A portion of the proceeds go to provide farm boxes to low-income families at little or no cost. Show your support by attending the launch at noon Thursday, May 28 at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center, 360 Harbour Way South in Richmond. To learn more, call (510) 236-8339 or email lbobo@richmondchildren.org.
