Success: Court finds Oakley failed to protect farmland

Great news! Greenbelt Alliance won its lawsuit to protect farmland in the City of Oakley, a fight that began in 2006. In an important decision announced October 1, Superior Court Judge Barry Baskin ruled against the Contra Costa County town, denying its request to move forward with its plan to build 5,000 houses in an unsafe area on important farmland. In a strong statement, he repealed the environmental impact report for the East Cypress Corridor project, effectively blocking the development and ordered Oakley to address the loss of agricultural land.

"This is a huge victory for the Bay Area and the state, because cities will have to protect farmland," said Field Representative Christina Wong, in an article in the Contra Costa Times.

Action Alert: Tell the Governor to support livable communities

The Bay Area is leading the way in planning for homes and jobs in neighborhoods near transit where people can walk and bike to get around. But cities and counties need funding to engage the community in its plans, and then to build the affordable homes, sidewalks, bike lanes, parks and other infrastructure to make those plans a reality. Senate Bill 406 would allow regions to establish a vehicle registration fee of up to $2 to create livable neighborhoods.

Email Governor Schwarzenegger and ask him to sign SB 406.

Update: Mixed news on state parks

While the Governor is going ahead with his plan to cut the state parks budget by $14 to 22 million, there’s hope no parks may close completely. Instead, savings will now likely come from seasonal and part-time closures, staffing cutbacks, maintenance delays, and closing sections of parks and campgrounds.

These reductions are still not acceptable. Check Save Our State Parks for updates.

Where: Room 328, Marin County Civic Center, 3501 Civic center Drive, San Rafael
