Greenbelt Alliance In the News
July 31, 2002 Walking tour to show off Redwood City planning Subheading By SUZANNE ZALEV, STAFF WRITERREDWOOD CITY -- A land conservation group that aims to bring affordable housing to areas that are transit-oriented and pedestrian-friendly will sponsor a forum and walking tour on Saturday. Redwood City's downtown revitalization efforts are a success so far, said Rebecca Mann, an urban outings intern with Greenbelt Alliance. The tour will highlight some of the city's efforts. The area, which includes a new housing development on Franklin Street and a mixed-use development at City Center Plaza, is close to a Caltrain station, as well as a grocery store and other services. "You could easily survive there without a car," Mann said. "It's not an auto-oriented neighborhood." The Greenbelt Alliance aims to discourage suburban sprawl into open areas. It sponsors outings around the Bay Area and picked Redwood City because the city is already addressing some of these issues. The walking tour will include possible future housing sites and will highlight some traffic modifications on Broadway, where the number of traffic lanes was reduced to make the area easier to walk around. Event organizers have encouraged city decision-makers to attend, as well as housing advocacy groups and the public. The presentation will begin at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in the community room of the library at 1044 Middlefield Road. The walking tour is expected to leave the library about noon.
