July 9, 2002 Alamo Creek plan up for vote Subheading By Linda DavisMARTINEZ - The Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors goes into its final deliberations today over the proposed 1,400-unit Tassajara Valley development known as Alamo Creek. The board is expected to vote after reviewing and discussing the aspects
of the large project, the first of its kind in the Tassajara Valley. The
session begins at 1 p.m. in board chambers, 651 Pine St. On June 25, supervisors voted 4-1 -- with Donna Gerber dissenting --
to declare their intent to approve the project. They instructed the county
staff to research a transit plan, refine Alamo Creek's affordable housing
program agreement and pin down answers to other questions. The mammoth project has drawn opposition from Danville and San Ramon
officials and environmentalists who question the availability of water
to serve the households, and their effects ontraffic, schools and roads. Alamo Creek lies just east of Danville and San Ramon and is being developed
by Shapell, Braddock & Logan and by Ponderosa Homes. The project was denied 5-0 by the San Ramon Valley Regional Planning
Commission at its January meeting after nearly two years of public hearings. Supporters of Alamo Creek, including the county planning commission that
approved it 6-1 in January, favor its affordable housing and wholesale
planning approach, while athletic groups applaud the developer's donation
of soccer and sports fields for the area's burgeoning youth population. Gerber, who opposes the breadth of the project, plans to ask supervisors
to only approve a general plan amendment, but not the land plans and maps
for the project. "The project in front of us has too many flaws," Gerber said
Monday. "I'm concerned the board is going to hastily approve a very
complicated project without the necessary scrutiny. We have a responsibility
to pay attention to the details." If the project is approved, Danville has said it will take legal action
to try to stop the development they say violates traffic mandates and
the county's land use policies. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Reach Linda Davis at 925-743-2218 or ldavis@cctimes.com. ### |
