Greenbelt Alliance In the News
May 8, 2002 All are responsible
Letter to the Editor BylineWho should be responsible for ensuring adequate affordable housing in Sonoma County? The answer is everyone developers, taxpayers and employers. This is why affordable housing and land-use advocates, like the Housing Action Coalition and Greenbelt Alliance, support the proposed jobs/housing impact fee. It is clear that Sonoma County is failing to provide adequate affordable housing for its residents. Housing for low- and very-low-income families is becoming more scarce. High-priced single-family luxury homes continue to consume our open space and farmland. Fees paid by developers and taxpayers currently provide some funding for affordable housing; the jobs/housing impact fee would add to the affordable housing pie by requiring new employers locating in Sonoma County to chip in and help provide housing for the new jobs they create. We do not believe that employers should be entirely responsible for providing affordable housing in the county we believethat all segments of our community should work together toward solving this problem. We encourage all cities in Sonoma County to adopt the jobs/housing impact fee. Without a well-rounded, thorough approach to the affordable housing shortage, we won't adequately address our housing crisis.
