Population lull

Letter to the Editor

Byline

EDITOR: The fact that the population of a few of Sonoma County's cities has declined in the past couple of years, as addressed in a July 15 editorial, masks the reality that there remains significant pressure throughout the county for development of open space and agricultural land. According to U.S. Census data, the population of the county as a whole grew from 388,000 in 1990 to 459,000 by 2000 -- an increase of 18 percent. Even after the economy soured, the population continued to grow, reaching 468,000 by July 2002.

Sonoma County's scenic beauty, ideal climate and vibrant communities will make it a desirable place to live and work well into the future. The county should take advantage of this lull in population growth to prepare itself for future growth by further strengthening policies that protect our open spaces and agriculture lands, and promote compact and efficient use of the land within the cities' urban growth boundaries.

In addition, elected officials should work closely with environmentalists, housing advocates, and agricultural and business communities to implement a job-housing linkage fee that will ensure that people who work in Sonoma County have access to housing choices that enable them to live here.
