Greenbelt Alliance In the News
November 18, 2003 Full slate before city-school panel including Sobrato High, LO renovation Subheading By Marilyn Dubil (marilynd@morganhilltimes.com)Teacher housing, status of Sobrato High construction and Live Oak High renovations, safe routes to schools and school policing issues are among items representatives from the City Council and staff and School Board trustees and district staff will discuss Friday morning. The regular monthly meeting of the City/School Liaison Committee will be held at 8 a.m. at P.A. Walsh Elementary, 353 W. Main Ave. Many of the issues that the individual groups - the council and the board - deal with have implications for the other; the meetings are an opportunity for each organization to report on these, answer questions and gather information. Typically, Councilmen Larry Carr and Steve Tate and City Manager Ed Tewes represent the city, with Police Chief Jerry Galvin or Lt. Joe Sampson giving the police perspective. School Board President Tom Kinoshita and Trustee Shellé Thomas represent the board at the meeting, and Superintendent Carolyn McKennan and Deputy Superintendent Bonnie Branco represent the district. The meetings are open to the public. During Friday's meeting, the committee will also discuss the decision made by trustees during Monday's School Board meeting on the boundaries for the high schools and middle schools. Recommendations developed by the boundary committee were presented to the board, and public forums were held to present them to the community. Another item of interest to both groups is the Coyote Valley Plan, a work in progress that is calling for "smart growth" to develop the area still in the San Jose city limits but undeveloped. A San Jose city staffer and a representative from the Greenbelt Alliance reported on the progress of the plan to both the council and the board in recent weeks; committee members will discuss how their organization could be impacted by the plan. ### |
