Greenbelt Alliance In the News
November 30, 2003 Jobs, environment and the Lowe's project
Letter to the Editor BylineThe Mercury News is doing its readers a disservice by trying to portray the debate about the proposed Lowe's store in Edenvale as one of the unions vs. a non-union company. There are legitimate environmental concerns that need to be assessed, such as the effects on traffic and air quality of a large, auto-oriented, big box store. In addition to the environmental impacts, the overall costs and benefits to the community of the proposed Lowe's big box should also be evaluated. Will the new store generate sales tax revenue for the city? Or will it simply poach sales from existing retailers? Will it provide new jobs? Or will it, by taking business away from other stores, put people out of work? In short, does the Edenvale area need another big box store, or would the community be better served with different, smarter development? Legitimate issues should not be dismissed as interest group posturing. Since San Jose has limited land left for development, new development should be done wisely so that it not only minimizes environmental impacts, but also maximizes the overall benefits to the community.
