COYOTE NEIGHBORHOOD WILL HAVE JOBS, AND BE COMPACT AND WALKABLE

Clear vision so far

Editorial

The vision that San Jose's mayor and city council have set out for Coyote is encouraging.

With 50,000 jobs and 25,000 homes, the neighborhood will have more residents and workers than Gilroy -- but it will be compact and connected, like old-fashioned towns. Residents will be able to walk to stores and jobs. Kids will be able to get to soccer without moms having to drive them. And 20 percent of the housing will be affordable by county standards. The memo outlining this vision is available at www.ci.san-jose.ca.us/coyotevalley.

The Greenbelt Alliance also has contributed good ideas, such as keeping some farmland along the Coyote Creek to buffer the creek trail and habitat. The alliance's report on Coyote, "Getting it Right,"' is available at www.greenbelt.org/resources/reports/report_coyotevalley.html
