Greenbelt Alliance In the News
September 1, 2004 Measure A is a
waste of money
Letter to the Editor BylineIn the Aug. 20 edition of the Daily Republic, Congressman George Miller blamed a failed attempt to pass a Solano Transportation Sales Tax in 2002 on the measure's inclusion of growth controls. The Congressman was quoted as saying "We tried growth controls last time. It didn't pass." Unfortunately, Mr. Miller is mistaken. Measure E in 2002 did not include growth control measures to insure that highway expansions wouldn't lead to sprawling housing developments. Without land use protections, highway expansions just encourage growth and put more cars on our roads. By discouraging sprawling developments that cause more traffic, growth controls insure that our tax dollars aren't wasted. Just like the failed 2002 Measure E, this November's Measure A should be rejected because of its failure to include land use measures that would protect our tax dollars and reduce traffic. Measure A's blind focus on highway expansions will be a waste of $1.4 billion of our precious tax dollars. Measure A will encourage sprawling housing developments that will put more cars on our roads. Solano Voters should not be fooled. Measure A will not get us out of traffic.
