Come celebrate affordable housing

Letter to the Editor

Byline

The cost of Fairfield and Suisun City homes is now higher than some of the most exclusive areas in the country ("Pricey Paradise? Fairfield homes cost more than some in Miami, Hawaii," DR, May 23).

In turn, the lack of affordable housing is exacting a high cost on our communities. Grown children and seniors have to move away from their families to find places they can afford. Local workers are forced to move to the county's outskirts and beyond, toiling through long commutes, clogging our freeways, and adding to development pressure on our natural areas and working farms. And businesses are going to have a tough time attracting good employees if those employees can't afford housing here.

Solano County is the fastest growing part of the Bay Area, with some of the fastest rising home prices: These problems are not going to go away. We need a more balanced housing market with a variety of options. That's why several local organizations have come together to address the need for more affordable housing in Solano County with the formation of a new Solano Housing Coalition.

Come celebrate affordable housing week and learn how we can create more affordable housing at the Solano Housing Coalition's Affordable Housing Week Reception, 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. June 9 at the Fairfield Community Center.
