Greenbelt Alliance In the News
May 6, 2005 LWV luncheon features Tahoe talk NEWS BRIEFS BylineTom Mooers, executive director of Sierra Watch and Piedmont High School graduate, will speak on his organization's successful efforts to preserve the beautiful Martis Valley near Lake Tahoe at 11 a.m. on May 11, 2005 at 112 Wildwood Gardens. Mooer's talk, entitled "Tahoe's Martis Valley: Sprawl in the Sierra" will give a brief overview of land issues and trends in the campaign to preserve the Sierra Nevada wilderness from development with the Martis Valley as a case in point. Last month, conservationists and developers announced an agreement that will provide protection for thousands of acres of wilderness land in Martis Valley near Lake Tahoe. This agreement brings hope to those who have worked hard to overturn a land use plan that would have allowed up to 6,000 new homes in this beautiful valley. Sierra Watch served as the lead environmental group in reaching this accord, which provides a model for the way future efforts might succeed in preserving other regions of the Sierra from development. Mooers is a native of Oakland and third generation graduate of Piedmont High School, class of 1987. Before joining the staff of Sierra Watch in 2001, Mooers worked as field director for Greenbelt Alliance in the Bay Area and as assistant executive director of the League to Save Lake Tahoe. Mooers is also a graduate of the Green Corps Field School for Environmental Organizing and the University of California at Los Angeles. The annual meeting of the League of Women Voters of Piedmont will be held at 9:30 a.m. preceding Mr. Mooers' presentation. All members of the community are welcome to attend Mooers' presentation, which is free. A luncheon will be served at 12:30 p.m. for $15, and reservations are required.
