Greenbelt Alliance In the News
May 7, 2005 Protest planned at Pardee project Subheading FROM STAFF REPORTSLIVERMORE Dozens of bicyclists participating on an annual environmental tour will stage a protest next week at the site of the proposed Livermore Trails housing complex. Bicycle riders participating in Greenbelt Alliances sixteenth annual Go Greenbelt! bike tour will be joining local environmental groups to oppose the development. Every year, the riders set out on a weeklong tour of the region to take stock of threats to the Bay Areas greenbelt of farms and natural areas, raising funds and awareness as they go, according to the Greenbelt Alliance. This initiative would move Livermores Urban Growth Boundary outward so a developer can build on currently protected land. It would cause terrible environmental damage, said David Reid, East Bay Field Representative for Greenbelt Alliance, in a statement. If approved by voters in November, Livermore Trails initiative would
allow the construction of 2,450 homes north of Interstate 580 and west of Springtown. The homes would be built over a 10-year span.
Pardee representatives countered that the project will have positive environmental impacts. Pardee will donate about 750 acres for permanent open space and environmental preserves and construct trails for public enjoyment of the open space areas, according to project literature. The Greenbelt Alliance protest will begin at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Hartford
Avenue and Lorraine Street. ### |
