Seeing the green in greenbelt

Paul McHugh

The Greenbelt Alliance, a non-profit group dedicated to the preservation -- and the enjoyment -- of open space around the Bay Area, offers two free, guided hikes this weekend. A hike to "Magnificent Mitchell Canyon," on the northeast side of Mount Diablo in Contra Costa County, takes place 11 a.m.-3:30 p.m. on Saturday (4/8). This is an easy, four-mile hike, with less than 1,000 feet of elevation gain. A walk along the Morgan Territory ridgline, to the east of Mount Diablo, is 10:45 a.m.-5:30 p.m. on Sunday (4/09). This outing is more challenging, covers nine miles, and gains more than 1,000 feet in elevation. For more information and to reserve your spot, contact the Alliance at (415) 543-6771, ext. 321, or visit www.greenbelt.org
