Mixed-use project the right one to do

Byline

On Dec. 12, the San Jose City Council will consider a new mixed-use
development at the corner of Brokaw and Old Oakland roads. The proposed
project includes about 600 homes as well as neighborhood retail and open
space. Inexplicably, the city's Planning Department has recommended that the
site instead be used for big-box retail, 350,000 square feet of it. That's
more than seven times the amount of retail the city says is needed. It also
violates the city's own policy excluding big-box retail from North San Jose.
Do we want an inviting, walkable neighborhood or a no-man's-land of parking
lots? The City Council should make the right choice for the city and its
residents, and approve the Brokaw mixed-use development.
