Festive Father's Day by the bay

Subheading

By Tom Lochner

Trains, ships, kites and history were part of a large slate of offerings along the Richmond waterfront Sunday, ostensibly aimed at dad but enjoyed equally by the whole family.

Father's Day began with a pancake breakfast -- or brunch, or lunch, as some late risers quipped -- aboard the Red Oak Victory, which included a tour of the historic ship and its museum in the No. 4 hold.

Organizers expected 240 people for the annual event but by 12:15 p.m., or 45 minutes before the end of breakfast, they had served just over 300.

"We didn't have enough food, so I had to go shopping for 100 more people," said Lois Boyle, president of the Richmond Museum Association, which owns the ship, "and we just sent a volunteer to pick up more eggs."

There were lots of Sunday barbecues at Miller-Knox Regional Shoreline -- some of them about dad, others about graduations or other reasons for a get-together. The good weather spawned numerous softball, volleyball and soccer matches.

One volleyball pitch in the middle of the park emptied out suddenly at 1:39 p.m. as the players and spectators ran off, screaming, toward the parking lot.

It turned out the Richmond Korean Baptist Church and Eden Korean Presbyterian Church of Castro Valley had a joint worship service in the park Sunday morning, followed by a barbecue and sports and games. Two large televisions near the parking lot showed the South Korea-France World Cup soccer match, which the Koreans had just tied 1-1 with a few minutes left to play.

"We want to go to the final 16," said a pleased Hoon Bae, the pastor of the Richmond church. Neither pastor mentioned the soccer squad in the service, although, Bae said, "I think most people pray for victory but not publicly."

Nearby, some children flew kites for the first time at the Father's Day Kite-Flying Festival, with mostly good results -- a few kites got stuck in trees. Other children with more kite experience, such as Ousmane Sow, 9, of Emeryville, tried out Miller-Knox as an alternative venue to the Berkeley Marina.

"The wind is a lot stronger there," Ousmane said, although it was just fine in Richmond Sunday to fly his red kite with a picture of Ronaldo, the Brazilian soccer star. Ousmane said he has another kite with a picture of Ronaldinho, Ronaldo's teammate.

Across Dornan Drive from the park, the Golden State Model Railroad Museum attracted a good Father's Day crowd, said member Phil Figel.

The kite-flying event was sponsored by the Sierra Club, the Greenbelt Alliance and Richmond resident Carol Teltschick-Fall as a way to draw people to tour nearby Point Molate, a closed former Naval Fuel Depot with historic cottages and what once was the nation's largest wine factory, if not the largest in the world before Prohibition -- Winehaven.

At Miller-Knox, people see a shoreline that used to be industrial, Teltschick-Fall said, explaining the connection between the kite event and Point Molate. She said she wants to familiarize people with Point Molate so that they lean on the city to use the land wisely. "Don't go for the fast dollar and the short-term benefit," she said. On Sunday, the kite event sponsors took more than 30 people to see Point Molate. which is normally closed.

Developers have eyed the area for an array of uses, including luxury housing and a resort centered around an Indian casino. Teltschick-Fall envisions the area for open space and historic preservation.

"Richmond has the most beautiful shoreline of any city in the East Bay," she said.
