March 23, 2006 Footloose Forays Wildflower hikes Paul McHughJoin the Greenbelt Alliance on one of its wildflower glory outings, which are led by Greenbelt volunteers. On Saturday the group visits Black Diamond Mines. The historic coal mines, spectacular views and plentiful wildflowers are all part of this strenuous but moderately paced hike through Black Diamond Mines Regional Park, in the hills near Antioch. Stay for an optional post-hike tour of a 19th century cemetery. 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. On Sunday, do the Palisades Pleasures hike in Napa County. This is a challenging hike in the Palisades, a milelong volcanic wall north of Calistoga, with a profusion of wildflowers. This hike offers spectacular vistas of the upper Napa Valley and Mount St. Helena, and a variety of rare plants and wildlife. 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. All Greenbelt Alliance outings are free.
