Greenbelt Alliance In the News
March 31, 2006 Region must curb sprawl, preserve land LETTERS TO THE CONTRA COSTA TIMES BylineThe East Bay is becoming a powerful economic engine ("Dynamic new East Bay-Central Valley region," Times, March 19). But a growing economy should not translate into poorly planned growth that sprawls out into the Central Valley. Instead, that growth should be invested in the existing cities of the East Bay, so that people can afford homes near their jobs. Growth in East County and the Central Valley is costly. The existing roads, utilities and emergency services cannot support massive new subdivisions. Development in these remote areas will be expensive to build and maintain, and residents in more central areas will have to subsidize the new developments on the fringe. Rampant, unplanned development will also pave over thousands of acres of some of the most fertile farmland in the country. This is an irreplaceable loss for the people of California, and it's an unnecessary one. An engine that's out of control can cause a lot of damage. It's up to East Bay residents -- and elected leaders -- to get behind the wheel and guide the region's growth. David Reid Reid is East Bay field representative for the Greenbelt Alliance. ### |
