What We Do

Greenbelt Alliance protects open spaces and creates vibrant places throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. We work in partnership with diverse coalitions on public policy development, advocacy, and education.

Fifty years ago, Greenbelt Alliance was founded by a group of citizens who fought to preserve open space. Today, Greenbelt Alliance understands that to save the hills you have to consider where people will live. If we change the way our cities and towns develop, and if people are empowered to decide how their communities grow, we can all enjoy the amazing beauty of the Bay Area—while lightening our impact on the planet.

How We Do It

Advocacy: Greenbelt Alliance has five field representatives who collaborate with residents, leaders, and other groups to preserve open spaces and promote vibrant places.

Endorsements: Greenbelt Alliance's Compact Development Team endorses projects that provide affordable homes near transit and in existing cities.

Research: Greenbelt Alliance researchers identify areas at risk and work at the state level on land-use policies and climate change.

Outings: Greenbelt Alliance leads outings on saved landscapes, hosts events, and celebrates the beauty of the Bay Area.

Outreach: Greenbelt Alliance's Livable Communities Outreach Team organizes trips to ideal urban settings in the nine-county region.
